Boston Terrier BreedersThe first Boston Terrier breeders of the 19th century crossbred the English White Terrier and the English Bulldog in an attempt to create a smaller and more agile version of a fighting dog. When dog fights were banned, the breed was preserved for its unique looks, intelligence, agility, and readiness to serve the owner. The original aggression to dogs was bred out of the Boston Terrier and it was bred down in size to create a dog suited for indoor living. Present-day Boston Terrier breeders produce purebred dogs for shows or as family pets. Prior to making a final decision on purchasing a pet of this breed, learn much on the breed’s characteristics, keeping requirements, exercise needs, and typical health problems. Since this breed is short-coated, it’s suited to indoor living. To stay in a good form, these dogs should be trained and walked for several hours daily. Leaving a Boston Terrier in the yard alone is not enough, as these dogs need both mental and physical stimulation and like to play with children and communicate with the family. Though most Boston Terrier breeders try to eliminate health problems in the breed, purebred dogs are very rarely absolutely healthy, because the gene pool of every breed is limited by several foundation sires and dams. Boston Terriers are prone to heart and skin problems and bone defects in the skull. Many health disorders are caused by unnatural body structure of purebred dogs. These short-faced dogs are prone to breathing difficulties in hot or cold weather. Prominent eyes of the Boston Terrier are prone to injuries. Whelping is often a problem in this breed. Puppies are often large-headed and cannot be delivered without a cesarean section. Purebreds from champion bloodlines, bred corresponding to the breed standard, possessing quiet personality are very expensive, but pet quality dogs that cannot participate in shows are much cheaper. They possess all characteristics of the breed and make wonderful pets, if given proper care and enough exercise. Since much in the future progress of a dog depends on the breeder, Boston Terrier breeders should be chosen very carefully. ![]() |
