Boston Terrier DogThe Boston Terrier Dog of today differs much from its ancestor developed in the 19th century for pit fighting. The original Boston Terrier was very strong, alert and agile. It was characterized by aggression to dogs and ability to fight to the end. When pit fighting was banned, breeders preserved the breed but eliminated its aggression. Today, the Boston Terrier lacks aggression to canines and humans and makes a successful agility and obedience champion and a friendly family pet. According to the AKC breed standard, the Boston Terrier Dog comes in three size varieties: under 15 pounds, from 15 and 20 pounds, and between 20 and 25 pounds. The breed standard disqualifies dogs that weigh over 25 pounds, but there is no limit for dogs that weigh less than 10 pounds. It allows unethical breeders produce very small “tea cup” dogs and claim they are of a high quality. Actually, tiny Boston Terriers are dwarfs or runts created by inbreeding. Such dogs are prone to a number of hereditary disorders and have a short lifespan. Proportions and balance are more important in this breed than a height, body length, or weight taken separately. The Boston Terrier Dog should appear square with a considerable length of legs and a rather short body. These dogs should not be stocky; their muscle and bone should be well-balanced. Males and females in this breed look much the same, but females are more refined than males. The muzzle in this breed should be short and deep, with a well-defined stop. The eyes of the Boston Terrier are large and round; the ears are small and pointed. The jaws should be broad and square, with short and sharp teeth. Boston Terrier Dogs have a short and smooth coat, which is silky and fine in texture. Such coat cannot protect from cold, but it sheds very little. This breed comes in black, brindle, and seal with white spots on the muzzle, chest, between the eyes, and on the legs. Dogs with solid coats are disqualified from the show ring. White coat markings are given particular consideration in a purebred Boston Terrier Dog. ![]() |
